Coverage outside Alberta
Does AHCIP cover me when I am outside Alberta?
The Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) provides coverage for insured physician and hospital services in Alberta and elsewhere in Canada. The AHCIP also provides two sources of funding for Albertans who wish to receive medical treatment outside Canada.Knowing what programs and services are available and what is covered can help Albertans make the best possible use of the health system and make informed decisions on the purchase of supplemental insurance.
Albertans are strongly encouraged to obtain travel insurance to cover unforeseen costs including emergency care and transportation when travelling outside the province or outside Canada. Alberta Health and Wellness covers only limited physician and hospital expenses. These costs may be significant and for this reason, it is strongly recommended residents carry extra medical insurance.
The Out-of-Country Health Services Committee (OOCHSC) application process has changed
What has changed
Effective August 1, 2011, applications for funding of out-of-country health services through the OOCHSC must be submitted by an Alberta physician or dentist on a patient's behalf. Patients or their representatives can no longer apply directly to the OOCHSC.
What patients should do
Albertans who wish to apply for funding of out-of-country health services through the OOCHSC should contact their Alberta physician or dentist. For more information on the process contact us.
