Health care coverage for students

If you are studying in or outside Alberta or come to Alberta for school, you need to update your health coverage information.

Albertan students

Albertan students may be eligible for Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan coverage under a parentís plan if they are:

  • Single dependent children under 21 years of age; or
  • Single dependent children under 25 years of age, who are in full-time attendance at an accredited educational institute.

Students studying in another Canadian province or territory

Alberta students who attend an accredited educational institute in Canada, and who intend to return to Alberta after completing their studies, should maintain their AHCIP coverage.

  • Confirmation of enrolment is required and will be required each year the student is absent.*
  • Contact Alberta Health if you are or will be attending school outside of Alberta.

Students studying in another country

Alberta students who attend an accredited educational institute in another country, and who intend to return to Alberta after completing their studies, may maintain their AHCIP coverage.

  • Confirmation of enrolment is required and will be required each year the student is absent.*
  • Contact Alberta Health if you are or will be attending school outside of Canada.

*Confirmation of school enrolment outside Alberta

Each fall, students who study outside Alberta are required to submit proof of their full-time enrolment to Alberta Health by November 30.

  • This proof must include the studentís full name, program of enrolment and study dates.

Proof of enrolment documents are:

  • a letter from the Registrar, with the Registrarís signature or certification, or
  • a letter of enrolment printed from the schoolís online portal, with the schoolís logo, letterhead and mailing address, or
  • a printout of online confirmation of course registration, with the schoolís logo and official website address

Send your proof of enrolment to Alberta Health, or in person at an authorized Alberta registry agent before November 30.

Canadian students in Alberta from another province or territory

If you are a student from another province or territory studying in Alberta and intend to move back home after your studies, you must maintain your health insurance coverage from your home province.

  • If your intent changes and you stay in Alberta, you need to apply for coverage in Alberta.
  • Health care coverage would begin the first day of the third month following the date you established permanent residence in Alberta (that is, the date you made the decision to stay in Alberta).
  • To apply for the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan, fill out the Application for Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan Coverage or contact us for more information.

Foreign students Ė students from another country

If you are a student from outside Canada, you may be eligible for AHCIP coverage. You will need to apply for AHCIP coverage. Students under 18 years of age must be added to the AHCIP account of a custodian.

  • Students who have a 12-month Study Permit (valid for an Alberta educational institute) and who will reside in Alberta for 12 months or more are eligible for AHCIP coverage.
  • Students with Study Permits valid for more than 3 months, but less than 12 months, may be eligible for AHCIP coverage if their application is accompanied by a letter from the student confirming their intent to reside in Alberta for at least 12 months.
  • If the application is received within 3 months of entry into Alberta, coverage is effective on the date of either entry into Alberta or the date signed on the Study Permit, whichever is later.
