1. Acupuncture Board of Examiners

The Board, in consultation with the Acupuncture Committee, is responsible for the planning, administration and scoring of provincial acupuncture examinations.


2. Acupuncture Committee

The Committee governs the practice of acupuncture.


3. Alberta Advisory Committee on HIV and Sexually Transmitted Infection

The Committee reviews and makes recommendations to the government regarding the prevention, management, and control of the human immunodeficiency virus and sexually transmitted infections in Alberta.


4. Alberta College of Paramedics – Board of Governors

The Board manages and conducts the business and affairs of the college and governs the registered members in accordance with the Act, the regulations and the college bylaws.


5. Alberta College of Paramedics – Conduct and Competency Committee

The Committee hears complaints and investigates the conduct of registered members.


6. Alberta Expert Review Panel for Blood Borne Infections in Health Care Workers

The Panel reviews instances of health care workers who have a blood borne infectious disease.


7. Alberta Health Facilities Review Committee

The Health Facilities Review Committee monitors the quality of care, treatment and standards of accommodation provided to patients and residents in health care facilities. The Committee also receives and investigates complaints that cannot be resolved at the facility.


8. Alberta Health Services Board

As the stewards of Alberta Health Services, the Board works toward the prevention of disease and injury, assesses the health needs of the province, determines priorities in the provision of health services, allocates resources accordingly, ensures that reasonable access to quality health services is provided, promotes the provision of health services in a manner that is responsive to the needs of individuals and communities, and supports the integration of services and facilities throughout the province.


9. Alberta Opticians Association – Council

The Council is the governing body for the practice of opticianry.


10. Alberta Opticians Association – Discipline Committee

The Committee investigates the conduct of registered members.


11. Board of Examiners in Podiatry

The Board governs the qualifications of podiatrists.


12. Claims Reassessment Advisory Committee

The Committee produces reports or provides recommendations on reassessments for claims for benefits under the Alberta Health Care Insurance Act submitted to the Minister in respect of the cost of health services provided to residents.


13. College of Physical Therapists of Alberta – Council

The Council is the governing body for the practice of physical therapy.


14. College of Physical Therapists of Alberta – Discipline Committee

The Committee investigates the conduct of registered members.


15. College of Physical Therapists of Alberta – Practice Review Board

The Board advises the Council on the assessment and development of educational standards including experience requirements and standards of competence for physical therapists and any other matter that the Board considers necessary or appropriate.


16. Expert Committee on Drug Evaluation and Therapeutics

The Committee is the Minister’s external expert drug advisory committee. They provide advice and recommendations to the Minister respecting the therapeutic value and cost effectiveness of drug products. Members of the Expert Committee are practicing physicians or pharmacists with expertise in pharmacology, pharmacoeconomics, pharmacokinetics and epidemiology.


17. Health Disciplines Board

The Board provides advice to the Minister on a variety of issues related to the administration of the Health Disciplines Act including registration and the regulations governing the disciplines under the Act. It also hears appeals related to disciplinary and registration decisions.


18. Health Information Standards Committee for Alberta (HISCA)

The Health Information Standards Committee for Alberta oversees and co-ordinates development, adoption and dissemination of approved health information, data and technology standards within Alberta. Operating through collaboration and consensus-building with stakeholders, the committee ensures these standards align with approved provincial reporting guidelines, and with national and international protocols.


19. Health Professions Advisory Board

The Board provides advice to the Minister on the administration of the Health Professions Act, the performance of restricted activities, and the regulation of new health professions.


20. Health Quality Council of Alberta

The Health Quality Council of Alberta (HQCA) is an independent organization engaged in gathering knowledge and translating it into practical actions that can improve the quality, safety and performance of Alberta’s health system. Through partnerships and collaboration, the HQCA is committed to achieving excellence in all dimensions of quality and safety across Alberta's health system.


21. Hospital Privileges Appeal Board

The Board is established under the Hospitals Act to hear appeals from members or former members of the medical staff of approved hospitals who consider themselves aggrieved by a decision of a Board of an approved hospital.


22. M.S. Drug Review Panel

The Panel assesses applications according to established criteria for coverage of Multiple Sclerosis drugs under a government-sponsored Alberta Blue Cross drug plan.


23. M.S.I. Foundation Board of Trustees

The Foundation fosters and supports research into the provision of medical and allied health services to the people of Alberta and promotes health matters in the interests of the people of Alberta.


24. Mental Health Patient Advocate

The Alberta Mental Health Patient Advocate (AMHPA) provides information about patient and client rights under the Mental Health Act, and the necessary support to exercise those rights, listens to concerns, and helps to resolve complaints. If you have questions or concerns and are a youth, adult or senior receiving care in hospital under one or two admission certificates or renewal certificates under the Act, or are acting on behalf of someone who is, the Advocate can provide assistance.


25. Mental Health Review Panels

Review panels – Calgary and south, central Alberta, Edmonton and north – hold hearings and make decisions relating to applications under the Mental Health Act.


26. Midwifery Health Discipline Committee

The Committee is the governing body for the practice of midwifery.


27. Out-of-Country Health Services Committee (OOCHSC)

OOCHSC considers applications received from Alberta residents, their personal representative who is a resident of Alberta, or their Alberta physician/dentist for funding of insured medical, oral surgical and/or hospital services that are not available in Canada.


28. Out-of-Country Health Services Appeal Panel

The Panel considers appeals from Albertans regarding decisions made by the Out-of-Country Health Services Committee.


29. Policy Advisory Committee on Blood Services

The Committee provides advice to the Minister on issues related to the provincial blood system and provides a forum for Canadian Blood Services (CBS) to inform provincial stakeholders on various issues being addressed by the CBS.


30. Electronic Health Record Data Stewardship Committee

The Committee oversees the stewardship of the Alberta Electronic Health Record (EHR) and the transfer of health information between the EHR and a health professional’s electronic medical record.

32. Public members who may be appointed to college councils

Public members may be included on a list from which members may be chosen for appointment to the college councils. The regulatory colleges of health professionals make all the appointments under the Health Professions Act:

33. Public members who may be chosen for complaint review committees and hearing tribunals

Public members are appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council to a list from which the regulatory colleges under the Health Professions Act can draw for the purposes of hearing tribunals and complaint committees.
