Your Alberta Health Act – Shape the Future

A guide to shape health services in the future

Developing an Alberta Health Act is a just a start. The rest of the health care system needs to be brought in line with the direction of the Act.

The Minister’s Advisory Committee made a series of recommendations to ensure that programs and system practices align with the intent and principles of an Alberta Health Act, including:

  • Ensuring that health governing bodies are making decisions within their mandates that reflect the principles of the Alberta Health Act.
  • Aligning other health legislation with the Alberta Health Act.
  • Aligning other legislation that affects the health of Albertans with the intent of the Alberta Health Act, including areas such as housing, employment, education, children and youth, environment and social services

They also said that a clear guide should be developed that would be used in the development of regulation, policies and programs. They suggested a framework as a starting point. It is organized around five directions and incorporates suggestions from Albertans who participated in the first round of online consultation in fall 2009.

Those directions are:

  • Ensuring a people-centred health system with access to care and services in the most appropriate settings.
  • Ensuring decisions based on the best available evidence and the appropriate adoption of technology.
  • Optimizing the competencies and capacity of all health service providers.
  • Promoting and supporting integration and collaboration across the continuum of health services.
  • Providing support for change and improved outcomes.
