Alternative Relationship Plans

If you are a physician, learn about the different ways you can be compensated through Academic or Clinical Alternative Relationship Plans.

Purpose of an ARP

The Alternative Relationship Plans (ARPs) program develops compensation strategies other than Fee For Service (FFS) to remunerate physicians for providing defined program services.

As at March 31, 2016, approximately 2,308 physicians in Alberta practice part-time or full-time under both Clinical and Academic ARPs. Efforts have continuously been made for physicians to join and benefit from the advantages of ARPs.

ARPs may be suitable for physician groups of all specialties, in rural or urban areas, and for existing or new programs. Physician groups or Alberta Health Services (AHS) may initiate ARPs.

The purpose of an ARP is to provide innovation in clinical service, and may enhance the following 5 dimensions:

  1. recruitment and retention
  2. team-based approach
  3. access
  4. patient satisfaction
  5. value for money
