Alberta ground and air ambulance personnel respond to over 370,000 events each year. These events include both responding to medical emergencies and transferring patients between health care facilities.
Levels of EMS Practitioners in Alberta
The three levels of EMS Practitioners providing services in Alberta are:
- Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)

- Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

- Emergency Medical Technologist Paramedic (EMT-P)

Ambulance standards and practices
The Minister of Health and Wellness sets and enforces standards and required practices for Alberta emergency medical services (EMS) / ambulance services.
The Emergency Health Services Act is the main legislation that governs the public EMS system.
All EMS providers must follow medical control protocols when providing care.
Ensuring public safety
An EMS consultant visits each air and ground ambulance provider in the province to confirm that they are complying with the legislation, regulations, policies and protocols established by the Minister of Health and Wellness.
Alberta Health and Wellness (AHW) inspect EHS vehicles, medical supplies, and equipment. In addition, AHW also "reviews operational policies and confirms that they are being followed."
