EMS Practitioners in Alberta

There are 3 levels of emergency medical service (EMS) practitioners providing services in Alberta. These are:

  1. Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)
  2. Primary Care Paramedic (PCP)
  3. Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP)

Alberta ground and air ambulance EMS practitioners respond to medical emergencies and transfer patients between health care facilities.

Ambulance standards and practices

Alberta Health sets and enforces standards and required practices for Alberta EMS / ambulance services.

The Emergency Health Services Act is the main legislation that governs the public EMS system.

All EMS providers must follow medical control protocols when providing care.

Ensuring public safety

Alberta Health inspects ambulances, medical supplies and equipment. In addition, Alberta Health reviews operational policies and confirms they are being followed.

An EMS specialist visits each ground ambulance provider in the province to confirm they are complying with existing legislation, policies and protocols.
